LIDL
Permanent artwork installation

In 2018 I was approached by global supermarket chain LIDL, to create a commissioned illustration for their soon-to-open site on Easter Road in Edinburgh.

The client’s key objective was to convey a local feel to their international brand; to quickly embed the new store within the community. For me, this meant ensuring the architecture, local people, and even the pets and wildlife, were reflected in the piece.

The illustration is permanently on display at the entrance to the store.

The process

I wanted to encapsulate what walking along Easter Road is like: the hustle and bustle, the melting pot of nationalities, the animals, and the community supporting their local stores. I took to the streets with my iPhone and walked the length of Easter Road (roughly a mile), taking photos that would allow me to create a composition image of the entire road in one condensed line.

I had to use some creative license to omit small sections where the tenements were repetitive, but made sure all of the street’s iconic building styles and businesses were featured. It’s exciting even now to walk to my local supermarket and see my work on display!
